Understanding Online Trauma Counselling and Medicare Rebates in Australia
Living with the lingering impacts of trauma can feel isolating, and taking the first step to find support often requires immense courage. . At Life to the Full, we understand that taking the first step takes profound courage. You might be navigating a complex emotional landscape, and worrying about how to access and afford care should not be an added burden.
We are here to gently guide you through how our online trauma counselling works, and how you can access financial support through the Australian healthcare system.
Understanding Trauma and Recognizing the Signs
Trauma affects everyone differently, but you are not alone in your experience. In Australia, it is estimated that more than 5 million adults are impacted by complex trauma. Furthermore, about 12 in every 100 Australians will experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at some point in their lives.
When distressing experiences remain unresolved, they can manifest in a variety of challenging ways. Common signs include:
Reliving painful moments through intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares.
Experiencing physical reactions, such as a racing heartbeat or panic, when reminded of the event.
Feeling emotionally numb, detached from loved ones, or avoiding places that trigger memories.
Living in a state of "hypervigilance" feeling constantly on guard, irritable, or struggling to fall asleep.
Healing from trauma is rarely a quick fix, but rather an ongoing journey of management, rebuilding safety, and restoring emotional well-being. Our focus is to walk alongside you, offering a safe, non-judgmental space to process these experiences at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Accessible Care Anywhere in Australia
While Life to the Full operates a physical clinic in Sydney, our trauma counselling services are fully available online to anyone, anywhere in Australia. We have found virtual sessions to be highly effective and deeply convenient, allowing you to engage in care from the safety and comfort of your own home.
Many people find a sense of peace knowing that a faith-aligned, Christian professional is on the other side of the screen. For deep-seated trauma, we often recommend working with our Clinical Director, David Schofield, a clinical psychologist with advanced, specialized training in trauma counselling and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
How to Access Medicare Rebates for Your Sessions
Navigating the financial side of your healing journey shouldn't add to your stress. The Australian Government’s Better Access initiative provides Medicare rebates for mental health support, whether you choose a secular or faith-based provider. Here is a clear breakdown of how the national system works so you can access the care you deserve:
The GP Visit: To access subsidies, you must first visit a General Practitioner (GP). They will assess your symptoms and can provide a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) alongside a referral.
Nominating Life to the Full: When your GP writes your referral, you have the right to nominate a specific practice or a specific professional, like David Schofield. Because our practice employs registered Clinical and Registered Psychologists, our evidence-based treatments are fully eligible for these Medicare rebates.
Session Limits: Under this plan, Australians can currently access up to 10 subsidised individual psychology sessions per calendar year. These are typically prescribed in an initial block of six. To access the remaining four sessions, you simply return to your GP for a quick progress review.
The Financial Rebate: Medicare covers a substantial portion of your session cost. You will receive a rebate of over $149.05 per session when seeing a Clinical Psychologist, or $101.55 when seeing a Registered Psychologist.
Managing the Gap Fee: This rebate covers roughly 60% of the consultation fee, leaving you with a manageable out-of-pocket "gap fee" of around 40% per session. If you have private health insurance, it is highly recommended to check with your provider, as some policies may help cover this remaining gap fee.
Telehealth Equality: Flexibility is built into the system. Medicare applies the exact same rebates to telehealth (video or phone) consultations as it does to in-person appointments.
Additionally, if you are a Christian educator utilising our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), you don't have to start your therapeutic journey over again once your employer-funded sessions run out. You can easily transition to a Medicare MHCP and continue your ongoing care seamlessly with the exact same Life to the Full practitioner.
