Is Christian Counselling Covered by Insurance?
At Life to the Full, we understand that the financial aspect of seeking support can often feel like a barrier. Our goal is to provide clarity and peace of mind so you can focus on what truly matters: your journey toward holistic flourishing.
Whether your sessions are covered depends on the specific service you are receiving and your individual insurance provider. Here is a breakdown of how the different branches of our care intersect with Medicare and private health insurance:
1. Psychology Services: Medicare & Private Health
If you are seeing one of our Registered or Clinical Psychologists for a mental health condition (such as depression or anxiety), you are likely eligible for significant rebates through the Australian government.
The Mental Health Care Plan: To access these rebates, you’ll first need to visit your general practitioner to receive a referral and a Mental Health Care Plan. You can nominate "Life to the Full" or a specific psychologist on your referral.
What is Covered?: Medicare typically subsidizes approximately 60% of the session fee for up to 12 sessions per calendar year.
The Gap Fee: There is generally a 40% out-of-pocket "gap fee" that remains after the Medicare rebate is applied.
Private Health: Depending on your specific policy, some private health insurers may offer rebates on top of the Medicare subsidy or as a separate claim once your Medicare sessions are exhausted.
2. Relationship Counseling: Private Health Rebates
While relationship and marriage counseling are not currently covered by Medicare, our counselors are highly qualified professionals with Master’s level training and extensive experience.
Allied Health Coverage: Because our relationship counselors are accredited with professional bodies, many private health insurers recognize their services as "allied health".
Check Your Policy: Coverage varies significantly between providers. We recommend checking with your insurer to see if your specific "extras" cover includes relationship or grief counseling.
3. Spiritual Direction: A Unique Path
Spiritual Direction is a beautifully distinct discipline where we help you "wrestle with God" and navigate matters of faith. Because this is a theological rather than a clinical service, it is currently unregulated by the government and is not eligible for rebates through Medicare or private health insurance.
4. Support Through the NDIS
We also partner with individuals through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). If you have an NDIS plan, you may be able to access subsidies for psychology and, in certain circumstances, relationship counseling as part of your disability support.
Taking the First Step Toward Fullness
We always encourage you to reach out to your insurance provider directly to confirm your level of cover, as every policy is unique. However, you don’t have to figure this out alone! Our admin team is more than happy to field any questions you have about our fees, rebates, or the referral process.
At the end of the day, we believe that investing in your mental and spiritual health is an investment in a life lived "to the full." It never hurts to inquire you have nothing to lose by reaching out.
