Can a Spiritual Director Help Me Find My Calling?
Almost everyone wonders why they are here.
This deep desire to find a life purpose is a natural part of being human. It is widely believed that this feeling exists because God puts a sense of "forever" in our hearts.
Because we are made in God’s image, we instinctively know that our lives are meant for something bigger than just getting through the day.
In the process of vocational discernment, this feeling of restlessness is not a mistake. It is a sign that points you toward a bigger story.
It is an invitation to see how your specific life and talents fit into God’s larger plan for the world.
How Your View of the World Changes Your Search
When people have a hard time finding God's will for career choices, it often depends on the "story" they believe they are living in. The way you see the world acts as an anchor for your life.
The Individual Story:
If you believe the world happened by accident, you have to create your own meaning. This often leads to a lot of stress and worry because a purpose you make up for yourself can change or fail at any time.
The God Story:
If you believe God is the author of your life, you have a strong foundation. You are a loved part of His plan, which stays the same even when you go through tough times.

Choosing to Help Others Instead of Just Yourself
There is a big difference between the world’s idea of a "calling" and a faith-based one. One focuses on making yourself happy, while the other focuses on the people around you.
Looking Inward:
Many people think the goal of life is "self-actualization," which means just doing what makes you feel good. This focus on the self can actually make people feel more alone and never quite satisfied.
Looking Outward:
A true calling is about loving God and loving your neighbour. In real life, love means choosing to serve. You find real growth and peace when you look for ways to help your community instead of only thinking about your own needs.
Finding Purpose in Your Pain
Sometimes, your biggest life work comes from your hardest moments. This is called being a "wounded healer." It means that hard times or mental health struggles are not wasted.
This happens in two steps:
Healing:
You find help and gain wisdom as you go through your own recovery.
Helping:
You take the lessons you learned and use them to help other people who are hurting.
This is a way for struggles to be turned into something good that helps other people.
Simple Steps to Help You Discern Your Path
If you feel lost and are trying to figure out your vocational discernment, these simple habits can help:
Ask a Core Question:
Take a moment to ask yourself: "Is it possible that my main purpose right now is simply to help someone else?"
Make Space to Listen:
Guidance from God usually comes as a quiet whisper. To hear it, you have to slow down. Using quiet habits like rest and prayer helps you create the space you need to listen.
Know Your Identity:
Before you worry about what you do, remember who you are. You are a child of God. If your worth comes from your job, you will be sad if you lose it. If your worth comes from God, you are free to do any kind of work.

Handling Changes in Your Career and Life
Your calling is not like a light switch that is either on or off. It is more like a dial that you turn as your life changes. People often feel lost during big changes like retirement or when their kids move out.
New Seasons:
If you change jobs, you aren't losing your purpose. You are just using your "dial" to serve in a new way.
Parenting Society:
For parents whose kids have left home, you can reframe this time. You can use your extra time and wisdom to help younger people or serve your church.
Constant Purpose:
Your job might change, but your goal to love and serve always stays the same.
A Message of Hope
Do not give up on the idea of having a purpose. The search for a meaningful life is important, and there is a very real answer. By choosing to live a life of love and service, you can find a path that feels right and does good in the world. Even when life feels very heavy, remember that you have a unique part to play in a much bigger story.
